Despite the name, The Big Bang was silent, according to sound scholar Dr. Mike Goldsmith, former Head of the Acoustic Group at the UK National Physical Laboratory, and other acoustic physicists.
The painting, Genesis and Evolution of Sound, illustrates the big bang of music.
Sound can be systematic, as in music, or harsh/jarring, as in noise. When humans’ evolutionary cousins developed their vocal cords, people began to vocalize and sing. The elongated red teardrop image down the center of the painting, Genesis and Evolution of Sound, represents the human voice.
The creation of instruments for producing organized sound, such as drums, guitars, and flutes, led to the development of genres like blues, rock & roll, and jazz. The human hand, my pops' appendage, is portrayed in the painting, representing countless musicians who make the sound we call music happen.
The Genesis and Evolution of Sound vividly depicts 23 musical instruments. The human hand is not just a symbol in this artwork; it also embodies human creativity. It plays a crucial role in creating music, beating the drum, plucking the strings, and covering the holes of wind instruments.
